OpenCV is built with CUDA but gpu::getCudaEnableDeviceCount() returns 0

However, calling gpu::getCudaEnableDeviceCount() returns me 0. I'm running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with OpenCV 2.4.11. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?
