What are the applications of feature detectors?

There are several novel feature detectors such as ORB, FAST, SURF detectors. However, I don't know what their applications are.

I noticed that they can be used for corner detection, image matching. But how they can involve in another applications. I know ada-boost makes use of these descriptors' property. But I don't know how to make use of these detectors.

I'd like to know if there are some reference materials for me to know more how to take these detectors into applications.

Or go take a look at the CVPR website, which is the biggest computer vision conference around the world, and look at what papers and applications get published every year!
