ear pre-processing

Ear is a new class of relatively stable biometric that is invariant from childhood to old age. I would like to test it, but first of all i have to pre-process the image in order to get only the ear region. Any ideas about this pre-processing?

Some preprocessing techniques are:

Normalization of the images. You can read more about it here.
Also, you can read about smoothing the images and averaging.
After this you can also look up noise reduction.

All of these methods will help in the recognition process. Hope this helps :)
