Example: Square, Triangle, Star, Letters

Trying to build up a cards recognition software for a game to be used on with smart phone camera.

I have an unpredictable background with game cards on it. Cards are always white background and rectangular with fixed width/height ratio. Cards contain a solid colour figure either blue, red or green.

How is it possible to extract all contours of cards and find out which figure of what color is there?

Please, guide me what features of opencv should i use to gain decent accuracy.
