background processing in binary images

I want to know if in an binary image or an segmentation image the background pixels are neglected to speed up the processing with objects which are not equal to zero.

I worked with a commercial library that makes a list of non-zero grayvalue coordinates and it speeds up processing the more, the less foreground object pixel relative to image size exists.

I hope I could explain my problem, english is not my native language.

thanks
