I've tried various combinations but I get videos that are hard to use for the end user. Really I have fairly simple and obvious expectations:

  1. Should play in typical off the shelf or pre-installed standard video players (e.g. Windows Media Player) without the user having to install additional codecs.

  2. Should allow cuing to any time in the video without crashing.

  3. Get a decent compression ratio (for mostly unchanging background)

Currently I am using 'XVID' packaged in avi. Windows Media Player won't play it. VLC plays it but crashes when I use the cue slider.
