unable to open web cam and usb cam while running the program

hi, i am using Open-CV 2.4.8 in Ubuntu 12.04. i am able to open open web cam through cheese, but when i run the sample program in Open-CV camera.py it is unable to open the cam. can anybody solve my problem please
