opencv accessing other ip cams then mjpeg

Currently i can only get opencv to open mjpeg streams. Is there a way to open other ip camera streams other then mjpeg? Is it dependant on what other stuff i have installed? I have ffmpeg but maybe i need libvlc or gstreamer?
