What is ACTUALLY done by OpenCV camera calibration procedure?

Is there a more detailed explanation of how the calibration problem is solved? Particularly, what I do not understand is how coordinates of the checker board corners (or whatever points in a calibration pattern) in the camera frame are obtained (X, Y, Z)?
