OpenCV to measure fish length

asked Jun 22 '15

Hi For my Master thesis I want to use 2 Gopro cameras for stereo videos. I need to measure fish length. I don't need any automatic recognition, I'd like to mark a line and the software tells me how long it is. I have very low experience in programming, how difficult do you think it will be to do this? What's the best way to calibrate the cameras? Thanks for your help! Andi

there's a stereo calibration sample here

though unfortunately, the tutorial covers only single camera, still have a look at that.

Do you really need 2 cameras? I mean, if you lay the fish flat on a table close to a ruler, then take a picture with a single camera, you can determine that 1 cm equals n pixels. So, finding the length would not be hard... Then we don't know if it possible for you to put the fish on a table ;)

I think that you need to calibrate your system in the water (optical parameters change)

I want to use this with living fish that are feeding, underwater I then need two cameras because the fish can be at different distances from the camera
