Camera Calibration info used outside OpenCV

I cannot use OpenCv for a project I have, but would like to write my own routines using distortion parameters or mapping files/images. Can't understand how to use them. Have tried to use the parameters with correction equations and have printed out the mapx and mapy values. They all seem to give illogical values. Does anyone know how to apply these to images?
