SVM degree parameter

I am doing dome tests on SVM classifier. I am varying the degree parameter, but what exactly is it? The equation degree? If so, why is it double, can it be because of he double power? If it is not the equation degree what degree is it? What values are "normal" values?

Another thing: I know about train_auto, but what are the default values of the grids? And how long does it take to find the optimal parameters? In other way, how many value for each parameter are in the grids?
