How does the Gunnar Farneback algorithm find displacement?

I understand that the Gunner Farneback's optical flow function finds the displacement of pixels (u,v), but can someone help me understand how the actual algorithm works? I've read that it calculates (estimates by finding a minimum) displacement between polynomial approximations of two images/neighborhoods. What exactly does this mean?
