why Jacobian is used in the bundle adjustment process?

1) I as referring the bundle adjustment related papers and in those each and every paper there was use of jacobian done by the authors, I am confused about the use of jacobian.

2) Also i have another query , what is the damping effect in the Levenberg- MArguardt method of bundle adjustment?
